Drafted in the 2nd round (75th overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009 (signed for $485,000).
View Draft Report
Switch-hitting first baseman Kelly Dugan has some power now in his 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame and projects to hit for more down the line, though he likely will wind up doing that at Pepperdine. He's a solid runner at around 7.1 seconds over 60 yards and has decent arm strength, so he could give the outfield a try. He's the son of actor/director/producer Dennis Dugan, who has worked frequently with Adam Sandler for years.

After forfeiting their first-round pick to the Mariners in 2009, the Phillies used their second-round choice on Dugan, the son of Hollywood director Dennis Dugan, and signed him for $485,000 to keep him away from Pepperdine. Injuries have littered Dugan's career, including a staph infection, a stress fracture in his back, a case of turf toe and a strained oblique that cost him two months in 2014. He broke his foot toward the end of 2014 at Double-A Reading and tried to play through it briefly before landing on the disabled list. Dugan's calling card is his bat and his power, and he's showcased those skills when he's been on the field. Much like system-mate Cameron Perkins, Dugan is a bit of an awkward runner in the outfield and on the basepaths, though he grades out as an average runner and thrower and a fringe-average defender on an outfield corner. He'll need to make up for lost developmental time, and he'll try to do so at either Reading or Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2015.
The son of Dennis Dugan, best known as the director of Adam Sandler's early comedy movies, Kelly played at the same high school as Giancarlo Stanton. He started making a name for himself in 2013, his best pro season, and earned a spot on the 40-man roster as a result. The Phillies' first pick in the 2009 draft (in the second round), Dugan signed for $485,000 as the 75th overall pick. He has the body of a power hitter, with a chiseled frame and long, looping, lefthanded swing that helps produce an impressive batting practice power display. He started translating his raw pop into actual home runs in 2013. He'd hit 15 homers in his career previously, then hit 20 between high Class A Clearwater and Double-A Reading despite missing most of April with a case of turf toe. Mainly a pull hitter with occasional opposite-field sock, Dugan holds his hands low, crowds the plate and has a hitch in his load. As is to be expected from someone with those traits, he's vulnerable to breaking pitches and doesn't project to hit for much average. He's also too aggressive and was exposed to a degree by Double-A pitchers. He's just a fair athlete and defender, though he has an average arm, and has played more left field as he's moved up the ladder after playing primarily right field at Class A. Dugan will start 2014 back at Reading.
Dugan is the son of actor, director and producer Dennis Dugan, who has worked with Adam Sandler on several comedies, including sports films "Happy Gilmore" and "The Benchwarmers." The Phillies made Kelly their first pick (second round) in 2009, after they lost their first-rounder for signing free agent Raul Ibanez. Dugan impressed in a predraft workout at Citizens Bank Park, and the Phillies plucked him from a Pepperdine commitment for $485,000. He began last year in extended spring training and played in only 28 regular-season games after he sustained a lower leg contusion that became infected. A switch-hitter, Dugan is slightly better from his natural left side. His swing has gotten longer since signing, and he has added a slight bat wrap. He also has gotten bigger and stronger, giving him above-average raw power from both sides. He has average arm strength and speed, giving the tools to be a solid defender in left field. Philadelphia commends Dugan's makeup, but he can be hard on himself at times and needs to do a better job of dealing with failure. He profiles as a corner outfielder, though the Phillies also have worked him out at first base, his high school position. He'll move to low Class A in 2011.
Dugan's father Dennis is a Hollywood actor, director and producer who often works with Adam Sandler, directing him in comedies such as "Big Daddy" and "You Don't Mess With the Zohan." His son has made a name for himself in baseball, where he was the first player the Phillies drafted (second round) in 2009 after giving up their first pick for signing free agent Raul Ibanez. His advanced bat and strong predraft workout prompted Philadelphia to buy him away from a Pepperdine scholarship with a $485,000 bonus. Dugan started switch-hitting as an 8-year-old and recognizes pitches well from both sides of the plate. A slightly better hitter as a lefty, he has average to plus raw power from both sides, thanks to good strength and a fairly mature, physical frame. He has average speed and arm strength, making right field a viable option. The Phillies are encouraged by his competitive streak and believe he'll do what it takes to get the most out of his ability. He's probably headed to Williamsport in 2010 because Lakewood's projected outfield is already crowded with Leandro Castro, Zach Collier, Jiwan James and perhaps Anthony Hewitt.
