Baro intrigued on the summer showcase circuit but was behind his peers physically and not considered a top draft prospect coming into the year. He spent the offseason getting stronger, transferred from a small, private school to Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) High to face better competition and emerged as one of the spring’s biggest risers as he performed throughout the year. Baro is a lefthanded-hitting shortstop with solid tools across the board. He has a sound, line-drive swing and a natural feel for finding the barrel. He is still wiry and not overly physical, but he flashes the ability to loft to his pullside and has a chance to grow into average power as he fills out. Baro is a sound defensive shortstop with clean footwork, natural actions and above-average arm strength. He is a fringy runner with questionable footspeed and range, but his glove and instincts should allow him to remain at short and be an average defender. Baro requires a lot of physical projection, but he has a chance to be a lefthanded-hitting shortstop who is productive on both sides of the ball if everything clicks. He is committed to UCLA.

Track Record: Baro shined on the 2022 high school showcase circuit and emerged as a rising prospect for the 2023 draft after he added strength and transferred to Capistrano Valley High in Southern California to face better competition. The Mets liked his athleticism and chance to add good weight in college and viewed him as a potential top-three-rounds pick in 2026 after three years at UCLA. New York drafted Baro in the eighth round in 2023 and went more than $500,000 over slot to sign him for $700,000. He made a brief pro debut in the Florida Complex League.

Scouting Report: Baro is a lefthanded-hitting shortstop with a lean 6-foot-1 frame, command of the strike zone and a future in the middle infield. He emphasizes contact at the plate and struck out only once in seven games in his debut. Baro’s line-drive swing is geared to find the gaps, with only occasional loft to his pull side. He projects for well below-average power without significant strength gains. Baro has strong defensive instincts that might keep him at shortstop, where he shows clean footwork, natural actions and an above-average arm. A rangier shortstop on the same team could push Baro to second base. His run times are merely average, but he earns high marks for his effort level and defensive consistency.

The Future: Baro is in the growth stage of his career. In three years he could look more like a scrappy big league second baseman that some scouts expect him to become. He faces a likely summer in the FCL in 2024 as he gains experience.
