Originally signed by the Yankees, Lopez pitched sparingly before being placed on the voluntarily retired list prior to the 2005 season. Reinstated and released by the Yankees before the 2007 season, he then signed with the Padres. Claimed off waivers by the Astros last April, he made his major league debut in August and stayed in Houston the rest of the year, though he didn't quite look big league ready. Lopez shows good command of a lively low-90s sinker, which he leans on heavily to get grounders. He throws a solid 82-84 mph changeup but lacks a reliable breaking ball. His 82-84 mph slider is a fringy pitch. Lopez also doesn't miss many bats, which limits his ceiling to a possible back-of-the-rotation starter. After getting additional work in the Arizona Fall League, he's ticketed for Triple-A in 2010, though he could win a big league job out of spring training.
