Matson is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound righthander who has a reliable, if unspectacular, starter for Harvard in his first two seasons. He then pitched excellently as a reliever in the Cape Cod League where he struck out 26 batters, walked three and didn’t allow a run in 21.2 innings of work. He throws a fastball that sits in the 90-92 mph range and will scrape a 93 or 94 while mixing in a low-80s slider and a mid-70s changeup. The change is a pitch that intrigues analytically inclined scouts given its unique shape and spin, and it also features nearly 15 mph separation from the fastball. Matson’s sister, Erin, is one of the best athletes in UNC history. She won four national championships in field hockey then became the team’s head coach after her playing career and won the 2023 national title in her first year on the job.
