Age At Draft: 18.9
An extra-large righthander with a massive, 6-foot-8, 240-pound frame, Baumann showed an intriguing fastball/changeup combination during the 2022 showcase circuit. He’s got a loose and easy operation for his size and moves well on the mound, though he could refine his direction and lower half mechanics in the future to add more consistency. He lands in a heavy crossfire position, with an open toe point and three-quarters slot. Baumann throws his fastball in the 91-93 mph range for the most part and has touched 96 with some running life. His best secondary is a low-80s changeup that pairs nicely with his fastball and has heavy fading life to his arm side and good tumble when he spots the pitch down. Baumann’s feel for spin is rudimentary. He has thrown a slider in the 79-82 mph range with some flat, sweeping action, but the pitch lacks tilt, bit and consistency. To Baumann’s credit, he has added power to the breaking ball, which earlier in the summer looked more like a slurvy curve in the mid-70s, but he doesn’t project to ever have a wipeout breaking pitch. He’s more of a control over command pitcher but has a solid feel for the zone—particularly with his fastball and changeup. Baumann is committed to Central Florida and has a chance to profile as a workhorse starter with plenty of arm strength.

BA Grade/Risk: 45/High.
Track Record: Baumann signed a $747,500 deal as a fourth-rounder in 2023 as one of the most physically imposing players available. He made a brief pro debut at Low-A Augusta after signing, and in his first full season in 2024 he made 19 starts, posting a 3.18 ERA and finishing fourth among minor league pitchers 19 years old or younger with 99 innings.
Scouting Report: An imposing 6-foot-8, 245-pound righthander, Baumann has a smooth, easy operation and attacks hitters from a higher-than-average release point. He dominated Low-A hitters with a fastball that sits 93-94 mph and has been up to 98 with above-average, heavy life and occasional armside run. Baumann threw the pitch for strikes 71% of the time and creates a steep angle with it thanks to his height. He adjusted his grip on the pitch in an attempt to impart more vertical ride, but given his angle and release height, it would be unsurprising if he also developed a strong two-seamer in the future. Baumann had such natural success with his fastball that the Braves had to encourage him to simply throw his slider and changeup more, which need work to become consistent swing-and-miss offerings. His mid-80s slider varies in shape between a firm, cutter-like breaker and a slower, slurvy variant. His upper-80s changeup was his least-used offering but a focal point after the season during instructional league, and the Braves were happy with the progress he made with it. Secondary development will be key for Baumann to miss bats at the upper levels, but he’s an above-average strike-thrower, and his strikeout rate jumped from 19% in the first half to 24% in the second.
The Future: Baumann will attempt to build on his excellent 2024 campaign in 2025 with High-A Rome. He has the look of a workhorse-like back-end starter.

Track Record: Baumann was one of the most physically imposing players in the 2023 draft class as a high schooler, and ranked as the No. 263 prospect in the class. He signed an over-slot, $747,500 deal with the Braves in the fourth round and then threw one brief, two-inning outing with Low-A Augusta before the season ended. Baumann hails from the same Hagerty High program as current Brave Vaughn Grissom.
Scouting Report: Baumann stands out for his massive, 6-foot-8, 245-pound frame and the easy velocity that he’s able to generate. In high school, he mostly pitched in the 91-93 mph range and touched 96, and he flashed that same velocity in his pro debut, but he still has room to add strength to his XL frame and could shortly be pitching regularly in the mid 90s. Baumann’s fastball has more of a sinker profile than a high-riding pitch, and he also throws from a lower release point than you might expect given his size. His changeup is ahead of his slider currently, and it could become an above-average offering. Baumann’s breaking ball has been slurvy and inconsistent in the past, but he showed some glimpses of adding more power to the pitch. It remains a work in progress for now.
The Future: The Braves are hoping to help Baumann improve the shape of his fastball and add more bite to his breaking ball, but they are excited about his raw talent, size and athleticism. He’s far away, but has a chance to develop into a workhorse starter.
