Mexico is one of the few remaining places where teams can spend money unfettered by MLB-mandated spending restrictions that affect draft picks and international amateurs. On a scouting trip through Mexico City in August 2013, the Astros purchased the contracts of a pair of Red Devils players, Heras and mammoth first baseman Japhet Amador. The 23-year-old Heras, who debuted in the Mexican League at age 17 in 2007, has a better shot at the big leagues as a potentially above-average hitter with below-average power. He has a long track record for hitting, having posted a .900-plus OPS in Mexico in each of the past three seasons. He's a solid left fielder defensively and could play center sporadically as a fourth outfielder. He has the hand-eye coordination and the lefthanded swing to potentially fit in that role, but his excellent plate discipline and ability to hit righties and lefties may allow him sneak into a larger role. Heras doesn't need a whole lot of seasoning to be ready for a shot in Houston, but he probably will begin 2014 at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
