After a strong professional debut in 1997, Bauer basically squandered his next three seasons and couldn't get past Double-A. He opened 2000 in the Bowie rotation before being sent to the bullpen and eventually down to high Class A. He bounced back with the best year of his career in 2001, making it all the way to Baltimore, and answered organizational questions about his work ethic. He held his own in six major league starts and will be expected to contribute in Baltimore in 2002. Bauer's stuff is good but not exceptional. He has a 91-92 mph fastball with good downward movement, and he made significant progress with his slider last year. His command has improved, but now he has to move the ball in the strike zone better and not leave his pitches up. He profiles as an end-of-the-rotation starter or long reliever, and will compete for those jobs in big league camp.
