Holberton was recruited as a catcher and bided his time for his first two seasons at North Carolina, getting spotty playing time behind the plate and in the outfield. He was a regular as a junior in left and in right, then took over as catcher in the NCAA postseason when the regular, Matt Roberts, broke his hand. Holberton's versatility, grinder mentality and power make him attractive. He ranked second on the Tar Heels with 10 home runs with a short, strength-oriented swing, and he controls the strike zone well with more walks than strikeouts. He's a fair receiver whose arm and throwing mechanics need work for him to control the running game at the pro level.
