OF Jamar Walton may be the best all-around athlete in the state. He was all-state in football and basketball and received a lot of late attention on the diamond. He is an above-average runner with a good arm who has some juice in his bat.

A three-sport all-state selection at a rural Virginia high school, Walton signed to play at Virginia Commonwealth. Area scout Joel Matthews established a trust with Walton and his family, however, and he signed quickly for $245,000. The Phillies and Cubs were among the other teams on Walton's tantalizing combination of power and speed, and the Marlins decided to take him a round or two earlier than they might otherwise have. He is tremendously raw and swings at everything but makes excellent contact because of his hand-eye coordination. His swing mechanics still need an overhaul as he has a tendency to drop his head when he swings. He reminds some scouts of a young Cliff Floyd, though he could fill out even more than that physically. He showed a solid work ethic and a plus attitude. His arm could be a plus weapon but he needs to take better routes. He projects as a corner outfielder but could have the arm to stay in right. He is a smart baserunner who could steal some bases once he learns that part of the game.
