OF Larry Bigbie has the look of a big leaguer, and veteran scouts say he has the tools to become another Andy Van Slyke. He's 6-foot-4, 190 pounds and has a projectable body. His best tool is his bat and he hit well over .400 on the year. He's a pure lefthanded hitter with a line-drive swing and has the potential for power in the future. He also runs like a deer with loping, effortless strides. His arm is improving but just average.

If you want to know how excited the Orioles are about Bigbie's potential, just check out a few of the names they throw out when discussing him: Will Clark (his swing), B.J. Surhoff (power potential), Andy Van Slyke (body). For those predictions to come true, Bigbie will have to add muscle to his athletic frame. He has great makeup and is a gifted natural hitter with a knack for getting the fat part of the bat on the ball. He should add power as he gets stronger. His tools are best suited for left field, though he has good pursuit speed for chasing fly balls. A hand injury ended his 2000 season early and kept him out of the Arizona Fall League, and the organization thinks he'll also hold up better with added bulk. He'll probably return to Double-A to start the season.
