Beimel grew up a Pirates fan in the mountain town of St. Mary's, Pa., two hours northeast of Pittsburgh. He became the first Duquesne player ever drafted when the Pirates selected him in 1998. Beimel has a wide assortment of pitches and a good idea of how to use them. His fastball routinely reaches 90 mph with good movement. He also changes speeds on his curveball, throws a plus changeup and mixes in a slider that can be tough on lefthanders. He showed the potential to be dominant in his final start of last season in Double-A, striking out 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced. Beimel is a good fielder and holds runners well. He struggled after moving up to Double-A midway through last season, and there were concerns he may have hit a wall in his career. Once he learned he couldn't fool advanced hitters so easily with his curve, he made adjustments and had success. He still needs to be sharper with all his pitches. Beimel projects as a starter at this point because of his ability to mix pitches, yet his fastball and curveball also could make him an effective set-up man in the majors. He likely will start this year back at Double-A but could be in Pittsburgh by 2002.
