Soto retains his status as a potential five-tool player but has not been able to translate those gifts into production. A switch-hitter with plus power, he has yet to make it out of short-season ball. Still painfully raw, Soto strikes out too frequently and shows little inclination to make adjustments. He has above-average speed and arm strength and is solid defensively, though he still must improve his jumps and routes. He has perhaps the quickest hands in the organization but tends to jump at pitches and make easy outs. He has power to all fields and uses the same swing from both sides. He showed his best improvement as a basestealer, getting caught just twice in 17 attempts. Soto is shy and tends to lose confidence easily. He was healthy again after an injury to his throwing shoulder limited him to pinch-hitting and DH in 2000. He should get his first exposure to full-season ball this year.
