Drafted in the 11th round (327th overall) by the Seattle Mariners in 2016 (signed for $100,000).
View Draft Report
Koval pitched on Cal Poly Pomona's back-to-back Division II College World Series teams. In 2015, he worked mostly in relief, but with Cody Ponce gone to the Brewers as a second-round pick, Koval stepped into the rotation this season and wound up the ace, despite working from a lower arm slot. At 6-foot-1, 175, Koval had lost a bit of velocity as he neared 100 innings. He sinks his lively heater, which has touched 93 and was sitting 88-91 mph late in the season, and commands it well. He works a solid-average slider away from righthanded hitters with a decent changeup he can use to keep lefthanded hitters off-balance.
