View Draft Report
A tall, 6-foot-7, 215-pound righthander who’s excelled in the bullpen for St. John’s since his freshman season, Hollowell posted a 1.65 ERA in the Big East in 2017 and followed that up with a 2.16 ERA the next year. This spring, through 33 innings and 18 games as the team’s closer, Hollowell’s ERA has risen to 4.36, but he’s striking out batters at a career-best rate, with 42 strikeouts in 33 innings (11.45 per nine) and 14 walks (3.82). He was better toward the end of the season, and has been showing a fastball in the 93-96 mph range, and shows some feel to spin a breaking ball. Hallowell starts with a slight squat on the mound in his stretch and throws from a high, three-quarter slot with some hooking action in the back. A reliever-only profile limits Hollowell’s ceiling in the draft, but his size and arm strength could make him an interesting Day 2 pick.

BA Grade/Risk: 40/High
Track Record: Hollowell spent three seasons as a reliever at St. John's, showcasing big stuff from his 6-foot-7 frame. The Rockies selected Hollowell in the sixth round and he impressed with Rookie-level Grand Junction. He dealt with an elbow injury that delayed the start of his 2021 season but finished the campaign strong. He moved to Double-A in 2022 and made 42 appearances and racked up 16 saves. He earned a late season callup to the major leagues and appeared in six games.
Scouting Report: Hollowell possesses above-average size and physicality that allows him to generate above-average extension. His ability to get down the mound amplifies his pitches, gives his fastball flat angle and makes it difficult for hitters to get on plane. Hollowell mixes three pitches but primarily works off of his fastball-slider combination. His fastball sits between 92-94 mph, touches 96 mph and features both a dead-zone four-seamer and a sinker. His slider is a low-80s sweeper with around 15 inches of horizontal break on average. He'll also flash a low-to-mid-80s changeup but it was a minor part of his repertoire in 2022. Hollowell has shown above-average command of his pitch mix.
The Future: A two-pitch reliever with above-average extension and unusual release traits. sample, Weatherly showed improved command, but it's difficult to know if that was simply a product of his stuff being way down.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 50. Slider: 55. Changeup: 40. Control: 55. -
Track Record: After dominating his first two years for St. John’s, Hollowell took a step back his junior year, but the Rockies selected him at No. 189 anyway. He immediately impressed in Grand Junction in 2019, posting a 2.89 ERA in 17 games with seven saves as the team’s closer. He worked to fine-tune his delivery during instructional league in 2020. Then he recovered from injury to put up another strong (albeit short) year in Low-A Fresno with a 2.45 ERA in 22 games in 2021, with four saves. Hollowell is 12-of-13 in save opportunities as a pro.
Scouting Report: His fastball sits around 95 mph and is combined with his mid-80s power slurve, which is his out pitch and a big reason why he’s tallied a 36.4% strikeout rate so far. He has solid command with both pitches and walks very few batters, while also showing the ability to keep the ball in the yard (three homers allowed across 42.2 innings). He morphed a crouched-style delivery into an upright one, allowing him to use his height and frame to generate more movement on both pitches.
The Future: Hollowell is a projectable back-end bullpen arm, especially if his strikeout rate stays steady. He’ll be tested in the high minors in 2022. -
TRACK RECORD: Hollowell spent three years anchoring St. John's bullpen and was selected in the sixth round in 2019 after a somewhat disappointing junior season. He bounced back once he arrived in pro ball and dominated the Rookie-level Pioneer League as Grand Junction's closer, notching seven saves in eight tries and with 30 strikeouts and five walks in 18.2 innings.
SCOUTING REPORT: Hollowell has the classic fastball/slider combination common in the best bullpen arms in the game. His fastball sits at 95 mph and can reach the high 90s and his slider is a plus offering in its own right. The Rockies worked with Hollowell on standing tall in his delivery, which has allowed him to get more out of his 6-foot-7 frame and throw downhill. Hollowell was a bit old for the Pioneer League in 2019, but the Rockies feel that his dominance was real.
THE FUTURE: Hollowell's two plus pitches and mentality to pitch at the end of games give him a chance to emerge as a high-leverage reliever. He'll move to full-season ball in 2021.

Hollowell comes from the same school that produced Mets minor leaguer Josh Prevost. Hollowell is similar to Prevost in some ways, and as a 6-foot-6 righthander who has shown flashes of arm strength, Hollowell has a chance to develop into a power arm at the next level. His fastball velocity fluctuated this spring, and he reached as high as 95 mph early in the season, but pitched more in the upper 80s at other times. He is committed to St. John's, a program with a solid reputation for developing Northeast arms, and Hollowell could turn into a solid player for the Red Storm.
