Bates began the year in Southern California’s bullpen and off of scouts radars, but he worked his way into the rotation at midseason and emerged as the Trojans top starter. Bates is thickly built at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and holds his stuff. His fastball sits 89-93 mph with cutting action, and his heater comes out smooth from an easy arm action. He gets most of his swings and misses with his fastball. Bates is an extreme flyball pitcher, which leaves him prone to home runs. He also lacks a finish pitch, with a below-average 79-81 mph slurvy slider his best secondary. Bates competes well and has athletic bloodlines. His sister B.B. Bates is a former UCLA softball star and his brother R.J. was his teammate at USC this spring as an outfielder.
