Track Record: Signed out of Venezuela in 2014, Alastre began his pro career with the Nationals by throwing in the Dominican Summer League during the 2015 season, before coming over to the United States with mixed results.
Scouting Report: In 2018, Alastre spent the entire season with low Class A Hagerstown, where he threw a career-high 118.1 innings in 23 starts in his age 20 season. Alastre has an average fastball in the low 90s, but leverages the ball well for the most part, occasionally getting flat and leaving the pitch up and over the plate. He's got a downer curveball that's average and a changeup that needs more work to get to average. While Alastre struggled statistically--and in particular needs to cut down his walks--the Nationals love his baseball IQ and decided to challenge him with his Hagerstown assignment.
The Future: If Washington decides to continue pushing Alastre aggressively he could start the 2019 season in the Carolina League, but given his age he might benefit from another stint with Hagerstown.
