Track Record: Lopez was part of the Yankees’ ballyhooed 2014 international spending spree, though his signing was far less heralded than other high-dollar acquisitions. He showcased as a third baseman at Carlos Guillen’s academy in Venezuela, but the Yankees wanted to see him at catcher. The player obliged, the team liked what it saw and signed him for $100,000.
Scouting Report: Lopez stands out more for his defense than his offense at this point, but he’s no pushover at the plate. He has enough raw power to launch impressive home runs in batting practice. The in-game power started to peek through in 2018, when he hit eight home runs in 302 at-bats after hitting just one home run each of his previous three seasons. He doesn’t walk much, but he shows solid bat to balls skills and limits his strikeouts. Lopez future plus arm and a quick release behind the plate, and he threw out 35 percent of basestealers between both Class A levels. He still needs to improve his game-calling and his blocking, as shown by his 17 passed balls.
The Future: Lopez ended the year with high Class A Tampa and is likely to return there in 2019. He has the future of second-division regular or a solid backup.
