Godfrey ranked No. 130 on the 2014 BA 500 and was drafted in the 21st round by the Braves. He chose to go on to Louisiana State, where he was the top player in the Tigers' No. 1 ranked recruiting class after Mac Marshall made a late decision to attend Chipola (Fla.) JC instead. Godfrey threw 54 2/3 innings for LSU as a freshman before he too decided to leave for a Florida junior college. He had a mixed season for Northwest Florida State, as he was hampered by several minor injuries. Listed at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, he has a strong, physical frame. His fastball sits in the low 90s at its best, regularly getting up to 94 mph. His changeup and slider both show promise, and he could end up with three average or better offerings. He has struggled with his command over the last two years, and will need to throw more strikes going forward. Godfrey is committed to Arizona State. -
Godfrey entered the spring as the top prep arm in the Midwest after a tremendous summer on the showcase circuit, and scouts saw a 6-foot-3, 220-pounder with present strength and four pitches he could throw for strikes, with a fastball that touched 94 mph. The spring has not been as kind, however. Godfrey switched his college commitment from Notre Dame to Louisiana State and his stuff has been down all spring, with the low point coming when he was chased from a start after getting just four outs and allowing four home runs. He has been in the 87-91 mph range most of the spring, losing the zip on his fastball and the snap on his breaking balls. His curveball flashed plus last summer, but the pitch has not had the same power or shape this spring. Similarly, his changeup has been average or better in the past, but he has rarely used it effectively this spring. A team could still draft Godfrey in the first five rounds based on what he showed last summer.
