Huff is the son of former Angels and Red Sox scout Tim Huff and was drafted by the Rays in the 32nd round out of high school. He instead made it to campus at Stanford and became the Cardinal's everyday catcher, leading the team to the College World Series each of the last two years. Huff is a prototypical "baseball rat" who has an advanced feel for the game and a high baseball IQ. He has a solid approach at the plate and rarely swings and misses or chases out of the strike zone. He has quiet, quick hands and a fluid swing path that generates line drives to all fields. He isn't particularly big at 5-foot-10, 198 pounds, but he can generate average pullside power with his high leg kick. Huff manages a staff well behind the plate, calls his own game and is a solid blocker and receiver. He threw out 37% of basestealers this spring and projects to be an average defender with an average arm. Huff isn't particularly physical and he doesn't have any plus tools, but his well-rounded game and advanced instincts give him a chance to be a backup catcher. He projects to be taken on the draft's second day.

Huff ranked as the No. 401 prospect in the 2019 class out of high school, where he drew plenty of praise for his baseball acumen and defensive versatility. After making it to campus at Stanford, Huff has settled into an everyday catching role, though he has the athletic ability to play other positions on the infield. His bat has steadily improved while in Palo Alto, and during the 2022 season he slashed .325/.421/.584 with a career-best 13 home runs and 21 doubles. The 5-foot-10, 198-pound catcher starts his swing with a big leg kick and a slight step in the bucket action, but he makes plenty of contact and has quiet, quick hands from the right side with a fluid bat path. Huff has average power to the pull side. Defensively, he blocks well, receives well and does a good job handling the pitching staff. He’s an average defender at the position with average arm strength who threw out 10-of-27 basestealers—good for a 37% rate. -
The description most commonly used by scouts to describe Huff is that he's a baseball rat and the son of a longtime scout who grew up around the game. Huff brings a unique skill set in that he's a catcher who also plays middle infield, drawing comparisons to the Dodgers' Austin Barnes. His bat speed gives strength to his swing, and his plus arm is more than enough behind the plate or in the infield. He's a below-average runner and may not have the foot speed to play shortstop at the next level, but he's an average defender who would be fine at second base. A Stanford commit, Huff will likely be drafted much later than his talent, baseball intelligence and overall versatility warrants.
