Track Record: Never a top prospect, Winans signed for just $10,000 as a 17th rounder with the Mets in the 2018 draft, but has quietly put together excellent minor league performances for five years. The Braves took him in the third round of the 2021 Rule 5 draft and converted him to a starting role in 2022. He dominated Triple-A Gwinnett in 2023 and also made six big league starts.
Scouting Report: Winans has the dubious “pitchability righthander” tag that isn’t a premium prospect phylum, but does adequately sum up his east-west game. He throws a four-seam and two-seam fastball with well below-average big league velocity in the 88-92 mph range, but both pitches have above-average arm-side running life. His slow breaking ball checks in around 78-82 mph with slider shape but more typical curveball power and is most effective as a chase pitch that starts on the mid-to-outer third and then sweeps out of the zone. His top offering is a low-to-mid 80s tumbling changeup that he threw almost 30% of the time in the majors and generated a 31% whiff rate. He fills up the zone consistently and is a solidly above-average strike-thrower with a career 7.5% minor league walk rate.
The Future: Winans will be in his age-28 season in 2024, and he has little to no projection remaining, but he offers solid value as a depth starter/swingman type who can attack the zone with four pitches.
