Drafted in the 16th round (475th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles in 2018 (signed for $125,000).

One of the hardest-throwers in college baseball, McFadden was a highly touted prospect out of high school--ranked No. 81 on the BA 500 in 2015. He will continue to draw interest because of his velocity, though he's never quite figured out how to throw strikes. Through three seasons working mostly as a reliever with Washington State, McFadden has thrown 80.2 innings and struck out 89 batters, but he's also walked 78. That sort of walk rate will be untenable in the professional game, but a team might want to take a shot on his arm strength that regularly produces mid-90s velocity. McFadden needs to iron out a delivery that has some violence and is very long in the back, which contributes to his below-average control. In terms of results, this spring has been McFadden's most effective season with a 2.33 ERA through 27 innings with 41 strikeouts (13.67 K/9) and 25 walks (8.33 BB/9).

McFadden is the latest 6-foot righty (or thereabouts) to get compared to Tim Lincecum in recent years, a comparison no one will win. However, McFadden did have some draft helium as his velocity continued to grow. He's a weight-room rat who has muscular forearms and thighs, and he reportedly deadlifts more than 500 pounds while bench-pressing 300. As his strength has grown, his velocity has increased. He peaked at 93 mph in past showcases but has hit 96-97 this season, depending on the radar gun. He's strong enough to maintain his mechanics and therefore holds his velocity deep into games, hitting 95 as late as the seventh inning of some gays. It's an explosive, energetic delivery, costing him control, and McFadden's arm action can be long, which makes his slurvy curveball fairly inconsistent. At times it has some depth but he'll have to tighten it up as a pro, not to mention adding a changeup, which he's shown in warmups but not in games. He's a Washington State signee who has first-round arm strength but checks few other boxes.
