Dalatri in 2016 was drafted in the 40th round by the Rockies but continued to North Carolina, where he quickly established himself in the Tar Heels’ rotation. He earned Freshman All-America honors and an invitation to USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. He was sidelined much of his sophomore season by a stress reaction in his elbow but returned in time for the postseason. Dalatri is not overpowering but has a good feel for his craft and understands what he needs to do to get outs. His fastball can get up to 94 mph, but he more typically pitches 90-91 mph and mixes in a good changeup and breaking ball. He consistently throws his whole arsenal for strikes and makes the most of his 6-foot-6, 240-pound frame to throw downhill and create groundball outs.

Dalatri won New Jersey's Gatorade Player of the Year in consecutive years, thanks to the polish and command to his game. He is a well-coordinated athlete, with a balanced, online delivery and a good understanding of what he's doing on the mound. Dalatri has a physically-imposing frame, standing at 6-foot-5 and approximately 250 pounds, leading evaluators to believe that he could handle a starter's workload. Dalatri also shows promising stuff; his fastball is consistently in the upper 80s and has show flashes of better velocity at times this spring. His breaking ball needs work, but his athleticism and cold weather roots have some scouts projecting improvement. Dalatri's father was a strength and conditioning coach in the NBA, and Gianluca was a strong basketball player growing up. He is committed to North Carolina and could be a tough sign.
