View Draft Report
Ricketts has been known to scouts since his high school days as the starting catcher at Orange (Calif.) Lutheran High, where he caught first-round pick Cole Winn in 2018 and played in two National High School Invitationals. After hitting just two home runs in his first three seasons at San Diego, he clobbered 16 homers this year while batting .373/.423/.658 and was named the West Coast Conference player of the year. Despite his large 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame, Ricketts is primarily a contact hitter who hits the ball hard on a line. He learned to elevate to his pullside this season and began to show average power, although he still has to prove that power will translate with a wood bat. Defensively, Ricketts has split time between first base and catcher and will have to work hard to be a fringe-average defender behind the plate. His size limits his mobility and flexibility and he needs to improve at blocking balls in the dirt. He has below-average arm strength but improved his transfer and release to throw out 45.7% of baserunners this season. Ricketts is a fourth-year junior and could be used as a money-saving pick. His production as a catcher should get him drafted late on the draft's second day or early on the third day.

Track Record: Ricketts’ amateur career started at California prep powerhouse Orange Lutheran High, where he caught future first-rounder Cole Winn and led his club to its first two of three consecutive wins at the prestigious National High School Invitational. He spent four years at San Diego before the Phillies selected him in the seventh round in the 2022 draft. He debuted at Low-A in 2022 then split his 2023 season between the Class A levels. An injury limited him to 70 regular season games. He made up lost reps in the Arizona Fall League.
Scouting Report: Early in the season, Ricketts caught scouts’ attention because of a combination of strong bat-to-ball skills and burgeoning power. He did an excellent job making contact on pitches in the zone but could stand to chase a little less often, though scouts praised his willingness to use the whole field. He’s not a standout defender and he has below-average arm strength that plays up a bit because of a quick transfer. He’s a fair receiver and blocker and gets high marks for the way he manages a game. Ricketts is a well below-average runner.
The Future: Ricketts entered the year as one of the biggest up-arrow prospects in the system but looked a bit diminished after returning from injury. An offseason to heal could get him back in the swing of things and help him bounce back to the form he showed in early 2023. He could fit as an offensive-minded backup.

Ricketts is a 6-foot-4, 225-pound catcher who makes plenty of contact and showed a massive uptick in game power this spring. After hitting just two home runs during his first three seasons with San Diego, Ricketts clobbered 16 this spring, while slashing .373/.423/.658 and was named the West Coast Conference player of the year. Most of his power came to the pull side this season, but he did manage solid average exit velocity numbers. Defensively, Ricketts will need to work on his mobility and flexibility to get down well on balls in the dirt and his size could always be a challenge in that regard. He has a below-average arm but has done a nice job improving his transfer and release to throw out 45.7% of baserunners this season. Ricketts will need to work to become a fringe-average catcher, but his production this season and positional value should get him selected at some point.
