Like his teammate McCardell, Lewis was another college draftee who was advanced for the Appy league. A 21st-rounder, he toyed with pitchers, winning MVP honors after finishing second in hitting (.323) and third in homers (nine). He has a quick bat, uses the whole field and has plus power. For a hitter with college experience, Lewis is still raw. He needs to control the strike zone better and Elizabethton coaches tried to get him to develop a less pull-oriented approach. The also worked with him on the other aspects of his game, as his speed, arm and left-field defense are just fringe tools. "Good players aren't just one-dimensional," Smith said. "For him to be one of the guys, he's going to have to continue to learn how to play defense. He's worked hard at first-step quickness, on his throwing, base running and sliding."
