After his original 2009 contract was voided following a failed drug test, Jones signed with the Padres for $900,000 in May 2010. He finished second in the league with eight homers despite getting promoted in mid-August, and he could grow into well above-average power. "When his body is totally mature," AZL Padres manager Jim Gabella said, "he'll be a big human being and will hit balls over light towers." He uses the whole field and Gabella lauded his two-strike approach, but Jones will have to make more consistent contact as he advances. He'll also have to improve his defense, as he has just adequate speed and range and undermines his strong arm with sloppy footwork. If he grows too big, he could wind up at first base or on an outfield corner.
