In his draft year at Southern California, Saenz didn't pitch at all in the postseason as the Trojans won the College World Series. Scouts loved his power arm, but he was so raw that he couldn't be trusted to get hitters out in key situations. His ERA has gone down each year as a pro as he has gained a better feel for pitching. If Barry Larkin hadn't vetoed a trade to the Mets last July, Saenz would have gone to Cincinnati with Alex Escobar and Eric Cammack. He throws 93-94 mph and has improved his slider, but still has bouts of wildness. If he continues to make the strides he did last year, he could follow a similar career path to former Met Mike Remlinger. He'll move up to the Double-A rotation in 2001.
