View Draft Report
A senior performer with Virginia, Casey was taken in the 22nd round of the 2014 draft by the Cardinals out of high school but made it to campus in Charlottesville. After throwing 32 innings and posting a 3.06 ERA during his freshman season, Casey underwent Tommy John surgery in 2015 which kept him out for the entirety of the 2016 season. Since returning in 2017, Casey has posted a sub-4.00 ERA in back-to-back seasons and struck out a career-high 106 batters this spring, while walking 25. He pitches in the 88-93 mph range with his fastball, with a solid changeup and a fringe-average breaking ball.

Draft Prospects
Casey was the ace of Hanover High's 2013 team that won the Virginia state championship, and he entered the year as one of the top prep pitchers in the state, though he has been bypassed by Jacob Bukauskas and Nick Wells. He has a quick arm and ran his fastball up to 95 mph early in the season before settling in with average velocity, touching 93 with downhill plane. The Virginia commit pitches heavily off his fastball, and his secondary stuff lags behind. His curveball flashes average but is inconsistent, and he rarely uses his changeup. He throws enough strikes to project average control, though his arm action gets inverted in the back. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder has an athletic, evenly proportioned build with room to add strength. With his stature and commitment to Virginia, evaluators think Casey will likely reach campus.
