Furtado comes from an athletic family. Both his parents played college sports and his sister played volleyball at Tennessee Tech. Furtado started his career at Wake Forest but transferred to Alabama after one season. A straight reliever with the Crimson Tide, Furtado posted a 4.75 ERA through 36 innings in 2023, with a 24.8% strikeout rate and 11.1% walk rate. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound lefthander throws a 93-95 mph fastball that gets up to 98 from an over-the-top slot, and he got around 18 inches of induced vertical break on the pitch. While he used the fastball 63% of the time this spring, he also has thrown a low-80s slider and a changeup around 80. He generated a 45% miss rate on the slider and a standout 79% miss rate on the changeup, which has both tumbling and cutting action at times and creates a unique look from his high arm slot. Furtado has pitched as a starter in the past, most notably in the Cape Cod and South Florida Collegiate summer leagues, and might get a shot to start in pro ball, especially given his projectable frame and quality secondaries, though he has below-average control now.
