Drafted in the 4th round (118th overall) by the Miami Marlins in 2008 (signed for $350,000).

Righthander Curtis Petersen is projectable because he's 6-foot-4, 180 pounds and has a clean delivery. He usually pitches at 86-89 mph with his fastball but has touched 92 mph, and he throws his curveball and changeup for strikes. He's committed to Nebraska, and like many of Texas' best high schoolers this year, he figures to attend college.

Signed away from a Nebraska commitment for $350,000 out of the fourth round in 2008, Petersen came in with a tall, projectable frame and a smooth delivery. He struggled in his first pro summer, but came back strong in 2009 after getting his legs under him at extended spring training. His fastball sat at 86-89 mph in high school but now works at 90-91 with a peak of 94. His 12-to-6 curveball can be a plus pitch for him, but it's his changeup that has shown the most progress. It now has serious downward bite and he throws it with much better arm speed. A quiet competitor with a bulldog mentality, the late-blooming Texan is considered one of the hardest workers in the system. Rare is the day his pitching coach doesn't have to chase him off the bullpen mound between starts. He more than held his own in the New York-Penn League at age 19. He figures to open 2010 in low Class A, where he'll continue to pile up innings and momentum.
