After two years in the short-season Northwest League, Kent blossomed in high Class A in 2001 yet couldn't make the Mariners' crowded 40-man roster. The Angels purchased him for $50,000 in the major league Rule 5 draft in December, then immediately sold him to the Devil Rays for $75,000. He has to stick on Tampa Bay's 25-man roster throughout this season, or else he has to clear waivers and be offered back to Seattle for $25,000, but the Rays think he can be a situational lefty for them. They're enticed by Kent's sharp slider and his ability to get lefthanded hitters out. Lefties managed just a .130 batting average and .167 slugging percentage against him last year. Kent also has a live arm that delivers fastballs that Tampa Bay scouts clocked as high as 93 mph, as well as an improving changeup. Not unlike most developing southpaws, Kent must work on his control. He was impressive this winter in Panama as a starter, but he'll remain in relief if the Devil Rays can hold onto him.
