There's determination and then there's Garabito. As a child he left the Dominican Republic as a stowaway on a freight ship so he could live with his father in Puerto Rico and get more exposure. Baltimore scouts liked him and wanted to sign him, but had to make arrangements to get him back to the Dominican first. He has made steady progress but was left off the 40- man roster this offseason. Though he played well this winter in the Dominican, he escaped the major league Rule 5 draft. Garabito is undersized and doesn't have much in the way of tools, with the exception of his speed and glove. But he's heady and versatile. He's a switchhitter who knows how to make contact. He played second base last year in Triple-A and shortstop in the Dominican, and the Orioles say he could probably play anywhere on the field. That makes him a strong candidate to be a big league utilityman in 2002.
