Calzado followed up a South Atlantic League all-star season in 2000 with another in the Carolina League last year, as he led Frederick in hitting and stolen bases. He topped his year by playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Cup tournament in November in Taiwan, where he batted .306. Calzado is quite versatile. While the Orioles see him as a third baseman, he was the Carolina League's all-star shortstop and made the SAL team as a utilityman. He's a skinny guy but should add power as he fills out. The Orioles have him working out to try to add strength. He's a proven .280 hitter who doesn't strike out much, so if he adds some pop he could move up this list quite a bit. He combines good speed and savvy on the basepaths. Calzado could stand to be more selective at the plate, and he sometimes gets too emotional on the field. But he bears watching, especially if he matures mentally and physically.
