Coffie has been overshadowed by other prospects in the organization, but it was he who made it to the big leagues in 2000 after taking a step back to Bowie. The Orioles still are searching for the right position for him, as he has moved back and forth between short and third throughout his career. He returned to short in 2000 but still played occasionally at the hot corner. His arm and power potential would seem to make him a good fit at third, but he hasn't hit enough to fit the profile there. He also seems much more comfortable defensively at short. In the Arizona Fall League, coaches and managers ranked him the best third baseman in the league after he hit .282-2-26. As his AFL performance showed, Coffie has intriguing tools, but he needs to show more than flashes of putting them together. If he does, the Orioles may finally have found the heir to Cal Ripken.
