Built more like a strong safety than a prototypical ballplayer, Sosa is tooled up but exceedingly raw. While he has great potential and a very high ceiling, he could take several years to smooth over some very rough edges. His arm, range and power are plus tools, and he has 75 bat speed on the 20-80 scale thanks to his strong hands and forearms. His strength is natural as he rarely lifts weights. In batting practice, he hits balls harder and farther than almost anyone in the system. Trouble is, he has no idea about pitch recognition once he gets into games. Extremely aggressive at the plate, Sosa drew just six walks in his first season in the United States. His speed is average and he projects as a prototype third baseman. His arrival at Jamestown pushed sixth-rounder Lee Mitchell over to shortstop. Sosa plays hard but still has a tendency to get out of control at times. He figures to start in low Class A this year.
