Organization Prospect Rankings
-
Morban and Abel Moreno emerged as the best pitching prospects on a prospect-laden Provo roster last summer. Working out of the bullpen, Morban showcased one of the organization's most powerful arms, while Moreno relied on pitching savvy and the best changeup in the system to keep hitters off balance. Morban began 2003 in low Class A but was demoted to work on his command. He's a prototypical power-armed, one-inning reliever who projects along the lines of Lee Smith or Armando Benitez. He rears back and throws an explosive 92-96 mph fastball with a loose and easy arm action. He pitches on a downhill plane from a three-quarters slot. His power curveball has hard, late bite and the potential to become a second out pitch. Morban needs a better changeup and more maturity. The Angels hope he'll respond as a starter when they send him back to low Class A this year.
Minor League Top Prospects
-
Morban worked out of the Provo bullpen after seeing limited action at Class A Cedar Rapids and wound up ranking second on the team in saves. He's more of a projection at this point than a sure thing, though managers weren't afraid to bet on his 92-96 mph fastball. "He's a long-legged Dominican with a LaTroy Hawkins type of body," Provo manager Tom Kotchman said. "His arm is so loose. He has a long way to go in terms of maturity, but his arm strength and potential are off the charts." Morban also has a power curveball with an excellent downward angle to the plate. His changeup needs work, which should come next season when the Angels plan to get him innings as a starter.
