After seemingly stalling as a hitter, Sanchez revived his stock with a strong showing following a demotion to Rookie ball in 2007. He flashed his big-time power and the full collection of five tools, leading the Pioneer League with 97 hits while uncorking showcase throws from right field. Then again, he was old for the league at 21 and took a step back after failing in low Class A in 2006. The book on Sanchez so far remains a story of untapped potential, and time is beginning to run out. He has range in right field but doesn't always take good routes to the ball. He has the speed to steal 30-plus bases but hasn't learned how to read pitchers and get a good jump. He has never had much plate discipline, though he did make a huge leap in on-base percentage last year. Sanchez was projected to develop into a Juan Gonzalez type physically when he signed out of the Dominican in 2004, but he has yet to fill out. He still has a high ceiling but needs to start moving faster toward the big leagues.
Francisco Hernandez made a strong transition from the Dominican Summer League in 2003 to the United States in 2004, and the White Sox say Sanchez can follow the same path this year. Given his size, some scouts say he resembles the second coming on Juan Gonzalez, though Chicago hasn't begun to tout his power potential that highly. Sanchez has terrific bat speed and makes good contact, finishing 10th in the DSL batting race last season. He's still raw on the bases and in the outfield, and while he can improve it's his offense that will be his ticket to the majors. He figures to spend the first half of 2005 in extended spring training and adapting to the United States before being turned loose at Rookie-level Bristol.
Minor League Top Prospects
In terms of raw tools and athleticism, Sanchez matched up well with anyone in the Pioneer League. He's a 6-foot-6, 195-pounder with plus speed and power, and he did have the best season of his four-year pro career. But he also was old for the league at 21 and played in low Class A in 2006. Sanchez still is figuring out how to translate his tools into skills. He covers a lot of ground in right field but doesn't take good routes to the ball. He's quick but has much to learn as a basestealer after getting caught 13 times in 31 attempts. He led the league with 97 hits but still shows a lack of discipline at the plate.
