One Cavalier to make a name for himself against Strasburg was Morey. He went six innings in that game, allowing five hits, three walks and no runs while striking out nine. He was 9-2, 3.14 in 86 innings this season with 66 strikeouts and 33 walks as Virginia's Saturday starter. His fastball sits around 90-91 mph, though he can touch higher early in games. Against Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament he touched 95 mph but dropped off quickly and got knocked around. Morey competes enough to go deep in games, as he averages better than six innings a start. His second-best offering is a slider that is inconsistent but shows flashes of being a good pitch. He's a good athlete, but at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, scouts can't project him to add much to his arsenal.

A 29th-round pick by the Rays out of high school in 2007, Morey chose to attend Virginia instead. As a sophomore, he handed Stephen Strasburg his only loss of 2009 by striking out nine over six shutout innings in an NCAA regional matchup. A fifth-round pick last June, he signed for $150,000. Morey works with four solid pitches. He gets good downhill plane on his fastball, which runs up to 95 mph but sits more in the low 90s. His sharp mid-80s slider is his best secondary pitch, and he also throws an over-the-top curveball and a promising changeup. His delivery reminds some of Jack Morris because Morey sits down a little and arches his back. His lead arm has a tendency to come up too high. He approached pitching coordinator Wayne Rosenthal about making adjustments after the season, and tweaked his mechanics to keep his shoulders more level. That eagerness exemplifies Morey's makeup and hard-working attitude. He's a good athlete but probably won't add much to his stuff because his smallish frame lacks projection. He should start 2011 in high Class A.
