During three rather middling seasons at Westmont (Calif.), an NAIA program, Crabbe didn't exactly wow the few scouts who checked in on him. But Reds area scout Rex de La Nuez thought there was something intriguing about the righthander, and signed him for $47,500 as a 14th-round pick in 2009. After three pro seasons, Crabbe is looking like a late-round find. A lean, tall righthander, he works with a 90-94 mph fastball and a solid slider. If he can refine his still very raw changeup to give him a better chance against lefties, he has a chance to be a back-of-the-rotation big league starter. If not, he has enough stuff to project as a useful reliever provided he throws more strikes. Crabbe will head to Double-A Pensacola this year, and Cincinnati believes he could emerge as a breakthrough prospect in 2012.
