Organization Prospect Rankings
At 23, Nowak was a little old to be considered a top prospect in the California League last year, but he made the most of the situation. Sent to high Class A in part because Kevin Witt and Wes Bankston were ahead of him on the organization depth chart, Nowak led the Cal League in doubles and RBIs. His compact stroke allows him to hit for average and for gap power to all fields. He controls the strike zone well, making him dangerous in RBI situations. Nowak also runs well for a first baseman and stole 17 bases in 23 tries in 2006. He offers a big target at first base and has experience at third base. The Rays also credit Nowak with taking a leadership role at Visalia following Reid Brignac's promotion to Double-A. He'll need to hit for more home run power at higher levels, but his stock is on the rise. He'll move to Double-A and could emerge as the system's top first-base prospect in 2007.
