After spending three straight years at Williamsport, Cortes looked like an organizational player. Then everything clicked for him, and he was named South Atlantic League MVP and led the league in on-base percentage before being promoted to high Class A in July. Cortes' approach at the plate and his understanding of the strike zone are both solid. He began exhibiting good plate discipline in 2002 and it carried over to last year. Cortes doesn't have the ideal power one looks for in a corner outfielder, though his nine homers in 2003 exceeded his combined total from his four previous seasons in the United States. He has average speed and is not a factor on the bases. While he's a good defender who began seeing action in center field last year, his quickness is better suited for the corners. His arm is average. Cortes will start 2004 back in high Class A, and if he continues to progress as rapidly as he did last season, he'll finish the year in Double-A.
