Drafted in the 6th round (173rd overall) by the Miami Marlins in 2003 (signed for $145,000).

3B Lee Mitchell performed well in the Cape Cod League last summer and can put on a show in batting practice, but he was hot and cold this spring, batting .299 with 11 homers and more strikeouts (55) than RBIs (52). His bat isn't quick enough to allow him to hit inside fastballs or pull pitches consistently. He does have a strong arm and plays a solid third base. His younger brother Russ, a Cartersville High shortstop, could be drafted and will play with Lee at Georgia next spring if neither turns pro.

The Marlins camp was split on Mitchell, who had a strong Cape Cod League performance in 2002 but followed up with a so-so junior year at Georgia. Eastern scouting supervisor Mike Cadahia was so adamant about Mitchell's ability that the Marlins took him in the sixth round and immediately were rewarded for their faith. Tall and slender, he drew comparisons to a young Aaron Boone. While none of Mitchell's tools are a plus, everything is solid average, with the possible exception of his legs. At the plate, he's aggressive with deceptively good power, considering his frame. He could stand to add another 15-20 pounds of muscle. Defensively, Mitchell has a reliable arm and complements it with good footwork and solid range. He can handle slow rollers but needs work on balls to his backhand side. He played 19 games at shortstop at short-season Jamestown, mainly to give more playing time at third base to Pablo Sosa. Mitchell spent his time in low Class A exclusively at the hot corner. He loves to compete and has high standards for himself and his teammates. With his advanced understanding of the game, he could start 2004 in high Class A.
