Salazar was named Appalachian League MVP in 1999 and joined Tony Oliva as the only Twins to hit .400 in a minor league (Justin Morneau joined the club in 2000). He earned a spot in the Futures Game and continued to hit after jumping to high Class A in 2000, which was crucial because his bat must carry him. Salazar doesn’t have a position; his lack of range severely hampered him at second base last year. He almost certainly will move to third base in 2001, though his arm may not be strong enough to stay there. His power may be lacking, too, as he’s more of a gap hitter. His plate discipline deteriorated last year, another discouraging sign.
