Boitel could be the Twins' best leadoff prospect. He has a nice swing from both sides of the plate, a quick bat and a knack for hitting balls to the opposite field. As he matures, Boitel could hit for a little pop, but that never will be his forte. He improved his basestealing ability in 2000, and needs to do the same with his patience. He's solid defensively in center field at running down balls and throwing. In addition to his switch-hitting skills, Boitel can throw with either arm, though Minnesota has him throwing lefthanded. After rating as the Appalachian League’s No. 8 prospect, he'll get his first taste of full-season ball in 2001.
Minor League Top Prospects
Boitel does a little bit of everything, playing good defense in center field and putting the ball in play at the top of the order. He owns a nice swing and should hit with a little more pop when he adds some muscle to his frame, though he doesn't project as a power hitter. He runs well and has a strong, accurate arm.
"He's got a quick bat and he'll hit the ball the other way" Wellman said. "He seems to be at home out in center field."
