Prospect Report: Gavin Williams Dominates In Second MLB Start

Marco Vargas, 2B, Marlins: Vargas, a 2022 international signing from Mexico, stands out for his above-average hit tool, and it’s been on full display so far in the Florida Complex League. On Tuesday the 18-year-old collected three hits, including his second homer of the season and a double, in a win over the Mets. Vargas is slashing .323/.469/.548 with six multi-hit efforts in 17 games.
Roderick Arias, SS, Yankees: One of the top signings in the 2022 international class, Arias had struggled out of the gate in his stateside debut in 2023, but his bat is starting to heat up. On Tuesday the 18-year-old shortstop extended his hit streak to five games and crushed his second homer of the year, a three-run shot off Alek Manoah, in the FCL Yankees’ win over the Blue Jays.
Andrew Abbott, LHP, Reds: Abbott has excelled since making his major league debut on June 5, and Tuesday’s start was no different. The 24-year-old lefthander pitched six innings of one-run ball to pick up the win, striking out eight, walking three and allowing two hits. Abbott is 4-0, 1.21 with 30 strikeouts and 12 walks in five MLB starts.
Gavin Williams, RHP, Guardians: Williams, one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, was at his best in his second MLB start on Tuesday. The 2021 first-round pick from East Carolina struck out six, walked one and allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings against the Royals. Williams’ plus-plus fastball induced eight swings and misses on the day, and he got two whiffs with his slider.
