Prospect Report: Gunnar Henderson Goes Very Deep
Gunnar Henderson, SS, Orioles: The top prospect in baseball just keeps impressing. On Monday, with Baltimore still fighting for a shot at the playoffs, the 21-year-old Henderson let loose on a long, loud home run. Want specifics? Anthony Volpe, SS, Yankees: Want another shortstop within the Top 10 of Baseball America’s Top 100 on a team fighting for the playoffs? Look no further than Volpe, the Yankees’ top minor league talent, whose Scranton/Wilkes-Barre club is battling with Durham for the International League East title and a trip to Vegas. Volpe went 2-for-6 with a double, home run and stolen base on Monday as his team staved off elimination for another day. He is now the only player in the minor leagues with 35-plus doubles, 20-plus home runs and 40-plus stolen bases.
Casey Schmitt, 3B, Giants: All season long, Schmitt has hit. And he continued doing so last night with Triple-A Sacramento, where he went 3-for-4 with his 25th double of the season. In a year that has taken him from Northwest League-champion High-A Eugene to Triple-A Sacramento, Schmitt has now produced a stellar slash line of .295/.369/.488 wit 25 doubles and 20 home runs while playing exemplary defense at third base.
