All 66 Prospects And Recent Prospect Graduates The Padres Have Traded In 33 Months

Every contending team trades prospects to bolster their major league roster at some point.

The Cubs traded six prospects, including future all-stars Gleyber Torres and Paul Blackburn, during the 2016 season to acquire Mike Montgomery and Aroldis Chapman, each of whom played crucial roles in helping them win the World Series. The Astros traded three top prospects during the 2017 season to acquire Justin Verlander on their way to winning their first World Series in franchise history. The Red Sox traded future all-star Santiago Espinal as a prospect during the 2018 season for Steve Pearce, who won the World Series MVP award after leading Boston to its second championship in five years. And the Braves, of course, traded seven prospects at the 2021 trade deadline as they built an entirely new outfield, moves that propelled them from a sub-.500 record to a World Series title.

Still, no team on record has traded prospects or young big leaguers as frequently and fervently as the Padres in recent years. They traded 11 prospects or recent prospect graduates in their latest deadline frenzy, acquiring Juan Soto, Josh Bell, Josh Hader, Brandon Drury and Cam Gallagher in return.

In total, the moves add to a staggering sum of prospects or recent prospect graduates the Padres have traded away.

Beginning with the November 2019 trade that sent Luis Urias and Eric Lauer to the Brewers, the Padres have traded 66 prospects or recent prospect graduates in just over two and a half years.

That staggering total includes many players who have gone on to early big league success, including all-stars Ty France and David Bednar, as well as many prospects still making their way up the minors. Some could undoubtedly have helped the Padres in recent seasons, but if the Padres fulfill their goal of reaching multiple postseasons and winning their first World Series, the trades will have been worth it.
