Prospect Injury Updates: News on Nick Bitsko, James Wood, Brennen Davis And More

Angels

SS Jeremiah Jackson (4) has missed the last six weeks with an oblique strain. He is set to begin playing in rehab games this week.

3B Werner Blakely (13) has missed the past month with a hamstring injury. He is set to return in the next week or two.

RHP Chris Rodriguez (15) is progressing from his offseason shoulder surgery but has not begun throwing yet. He is still months away from returning and has no set timeline.

RHP Mason Erla (18) has missed the last six weeks due to shoulder soreness. He is pitching in rehab games and should return to official games soon.

OF Trey Cabbage (25) suffered a broken bone in his left arm in a collision at first base on May 13. He does not have a specific timeline to return, but it is not expected to be a season-ending injury.

RHP Jack Kochanowicz has yet to pitch this season due to an oblique strain. He is set to return to the mound in the next 2-3 weeks.

OF Natanael Santana tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

Astros

3B Joe Perez (5) went on the injured list in early May with a strained oblique and does not have a timetable to return. 

OF Matthew Barefoot (25) had shoulder surgery in mid-April and will miss the rest of the season. 

Athletics

C/1B Tyler Soderstrom (1) has not caught in a game since April 29 due to a thumb injury he suffered while catching. He has been able to hit and play first base, but the sore thumb has kept him from catching.

RHP Gunnar Hoglund (6) is progressing on schedule in his rehab from Tommy John surgery.

RHP Mason Miller (26) has a muscle strain under his scapula. It has sidelined him for months and likely will keep him out a while longer.

Blue Jays

RHP Nate Pearson (5) has been sidelined with mononucleosis since spring training. He is nearing a rehab assignment. 

RHP C.J. Van Eyk (18) had Tommy John surgery in February and will miss the season. 

SS Rikelvin De Castro (27) has been on the injured list with mononucleosis since April 26. He is progressing in his rehab and playing 5-7 innings in extended spring training. 

Braves

RHP Spencer Schwellenbach (14) had Tommy John surgery last August. He threw for the first time last month and has progressed to soft toss off of flat ground. 

RHP Daysbel Hernandez (17) had Tommy John surgery in early February and will be out until next season.

RHP Brooks Wilson (18) had Tommy John surgery in April and will be out until next season.

RHP William Woods (23) left his start on May 10 with an ankle injury and was placed on the injured list. He does not have a set timetable to return.

Brewers

RHP Abner Uribe (18) had season-ending surgery in April for a torn meniscus in his left knee.

RHP Logan Henderson (21) had right elbow surgery before the season and has yet to make his debut. It wasn’t Tommy John surgery, and he could return later this season.

Cardinals

OF Joshua Baez (12) has been on the injured list since May 18 with a left wrist sprain.

Cubs

OF Brennen Davis (1) has been out since May 3 with lower back discomfort. He has no set timetable to return.

LHP Brailyn Marquez (8) contracted Covid-19 before spring training for the second straight year and had to recover and clear protocols before he could begin ramping up. He is currently throwing at the Cubs complex in Arizona but does not have a set timetable to begin pitching in rehab games.

SS Ed Howard (20) had season-ending surgery on his left hip last week. He suffered the injury trying to avoid a tag running to first base on May 10. 

LHP Drew Gray (29) had Tommy John surgery during spring training. He will be out until next season.

RHP Michael McAvene is progressing in his rehab from Tommy John surgery and is throwing at the Cubs complex in Arizona. He does not yet have a timeline for a rehab assignment.

LHP Jack Patterson suffered a setback in his rehab from Tommy John surgery and will remain out a while longer.

D-backs

RHP Joe Elbis (27) has missed the past month with mild shoulder inflammation. 

RHPs Justin Martinez (28) and Conor Grammes (29) are progressing on schedule in their rehabs from Tommy John surgery. They are targeting mid-summer returns.

Dodgers

RHP Carlos Duran (27) has yet to pitch this season due to shoulder discomfort. He is throwing bullpens and is expected to return to games soon.

RHP Hyun il-Choi (28) has missed the last six weeks with forearm inflammation. He is set to begin a throwing program this week.

Giants

OF Luis Matos (4) has missed the last three weeks with a strained quad, though he was never placed on the injured list. He is currently playing in rehab games in extended spring training.

RHP Ryan Murphy (10) missed the first five weeks of the season with back spasms but returned to make his season debut May 15.

Guardians

RHP Daniel Espino (1) is on the injured list with right knee tendinitis he suffered in a bullpen session. He is expected to return at an unspecified date later this season. 

SS Gabriel Arias (5) had surgery for a fractured right hand in early May. He will be out at least until mid-June.

RHP Cody Morris (16) strained his right shoulder in March and is currently on the 60-day injured list.

Mariners

RHP Juan Then (21) is on the injured list with an unspecified elbow injury. He does not have a set timeline to return.

RHP Isaiah Campbell has missed the past month due to elbow pain. He is throwing side sessions but is not expected to return to games for at least another 2-3 weeks.

Marlins

RHP Sixto Sanchez (5) is currently in the midst of his throwing progression after having shoulder surgery in July 2021. He is not expected to pitch this year, but it’s not entirely off the table.

LHP Jake Eder (6) is progressing in his rehab from Tommy John surgery last summer. 

Mets

LHP Luis Rodriguez (16) had Tommy John surgery in March and is out for the season. He pitched his way to Low-A St. Lucie for seven innings as an 18-year-old last summer.

SS Kevin Kendall (26), a 2021 seventh-rounder out of UCLA, has yet to play this season due to a thumb injury. He hit .327/.421/.451 with eight steals in a 31-game pro debut for Low-A St. Lucie last season.

Nationals

RHP Gerardo Carrillo (8) has been on the injured list since April 20 with right shoulder discomfort.

LHP Evan Lee (20) was placed on the injured list May 20 with a left foot injury. 

Orioles

OF Heston Kjerstad (10) was cleared to play after battling myocarditis stemming from a bout with Covid-19, but he suffered a left hamstring strain in March and has yet to play this season. He is nearing the end of his expected 8-12 week recovery timetable, but does not have a set date to return.

2B Connor Norby (11) has been on the injured list since May 10 due to swelling in his left eye he sustained after he was hit by a pitch. 

2B Terrin Vavra (13) has been on the injured list since April 20 with a hamstring strain. He is nearing a rehab assignment. 

OF Reed Trimble (22) had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and is likely to miss most, if not all, of the season.

OF Yusniel Diaz (24) went on the injured list in early April with a right hamstring strain and missed three weeks. He returned to play in eight games but re-aggravated the injury and was placed back on the IL on May 14.

RHP Kyle Brnovich (30) went on the injured list April 20 with an elbow sprain and had Tommy John surgery earlier this month. He will be out until next season.

Padres

OF James Wood (5) aggravated his previous wrist injury and is on the injured list for the second time this year because of it. He has no damage to the hamate bone and is waiting for the inflammation to go down. He began his swing progression this week and could return to games in two weeks.

SS Jackson Merrill (6) suffered a fractured left wrist on a tag play April 24. The injury was a clean break and did not require surgery. Merrill is currently rehabbing at the Padres complex in Arizona and is targeting a return in roughly four weeks.

LHP Adrian Morejon (7) and RHP Michel Baez (20) have returned from their Tommy John surgeries and are rehabbing at Double-A San Antonio.

RHP Efrain Contreras (26) returned from Tommy John surgery this month and is pitching at High-A Fort Wayne.

RHP Chris Lincoln had Tommy John surgery last September and is in the midst of his rehab process. He is set to begin throwing off a mound next week and may return to games by the end of the summer.

RHP Chase Walter has been out with a lat strain since February. He began his throwing progression last week and will likely return later this season.

Phillies

OF Simon Muzziotti (13) went on the injured list May 18 with a hamstring strain but is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Clearwater soon.

OF Jordan Viars (14) is recovering from a sprained ankle and is expected to make his 2022 debut in the coming weeks.

SS Luis Garcia (16) was placed on the injured list April 23 with a hamate injury.

OF Mickey Moniak (20) is currently on a rehab assignment with Double-A Reading while recovering from a broken right hand suffered in spring training.

RHP Christian McGowan (24) was placed on the injured list April 21 and had Tommy John surgery. 

Pirates

C Henry Davis (2) has a slight fracture in his left wrist and went on the injured list May 18.

RHP Quinn Priester (6) suffered a strained oblique toward the end of minor league spring training and is working toward a season debut. 

Rangers

3B Josh Jung (3) had shoulder surgery before the season to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He is out for the season. 

 

Rays

RHP Shane Baz (1) has returned from his preseason elbow surgery and is rehabbing at Triple-A Durham.

RHP Nick Bitsko is throwing at extended spring training and should be headed to full-season ball in the next couple of weeks. He has yet to make his pro debut after the coronavirus pandemic canceled the 2020 minor league season and he had labrum surgery that cost him all of 2021.

Red Sox

SS Marcelo Mayer (1) went on the injured list May 20 with a right wrist sprain. He underwent an MRI and visited with a hand specialist in Boston and does not have a set timetable to return.

1B Triston Casas (2) was placed on the injured list with a sprained ankle earlier this week. He does not have a set timetable to return but is not expected to miss significant time.

RHP Bryan Mata (11) is progressing in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. He is currently pitching in extended spring training games and sat 97-98 mph on his fastball during a recent outing against the Twins. He touched 100 mph multiple times.

RHP Thad Ward (20) is progressing in his rehab from Tommy John surgery last June. He is currently throwing at the Red Sox’s complex in Florida.

RHP Connor Seabold (21) went on the injured list with a pectoral strain following his May 15 start for Triple-A Worcester. He missed his start last week and is expected to miss another start this week.

Reds

3B Tyler Callihan (25) returned to High-A Daytona last week after suffering a hand injury in a car accident in spring training. He had Tommy John surgery last year and is fully recovered from that injury.

C Daniel Vellojin (27) missed the first five weeks of the season with a hamate injury but made his season debut for High-A Daytona last week.

Rockies

OF Benny Montgomery (5) missed three weeks with a quad injury, returned for two games and was placed back on the injured list May 19. 

RHP Jaden Hill (10) is progressing in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. He is currently working his way back at the Rockies complex in Arizona and could return to pitch this season.

1B Colton Welker (14) has been on the injured list with a shoulder injury since early May. 

LHP Sam Weatherly (21) is working his way back from a shoulder injury. He has begun throwing off a mound.

RHP Chris McMahon (22) suffered a lat sprain late in spring training. He is tentatively scheduled to return in early June.

LHP Helcris Olivarez (25) suffered a scapula strain and has been on the injured list since the beginning of the season.

Royals

LHP Asa Lacy (5) has not pitched since April 17 due to lower back tightness. He was placed on the injured list May 10.

RHP Jonathan Bowlan (10) is progressing in his recovery from Tommy John surgery and has a chance to return to games this summer.

Tigers

OF Riley Greene (1) missed the first month and a half of the season with a broken foot. He is back playing in intrasquad games and could return to regular games shortly.

SS Ryan Kreidler (6) went on the injured list with a broken hand on April 27. He is in the process of working his way back and could return to games in the next couple of weeks barring any setbacks.

Twins 

2B Edouard Julien (20) has been out with an undisclosed injury since he left a May 18 game after trying to get back to the base on an infield grounder. He missed time earlier this year with an ankle injury.

White Sox

RHP Norge Vera (5) suffered a lat injury and has yet to pitch in an official game this year.

RHP Jonathan Stiever (18) is on the 60-day injured list with a strained lat muscle and has yet to pitch this season.

RHP Johan Dominguez had Tommy John surgery in April and will be out until next season.

Yankees

RHP Luis Gil (4) left his start on May 17 with a damaged UCL and will have Tommy John surgery. 

C Austin Wells (9) was placed on the injured list after taking a foul tip to his right groin area while catching against Brooklyn on May 17.
