These Colleges Produced The Most 2021 MLB Postseason Players
Playoff baseball is well underway, and college teams are keeping a close watch on the action and their former players now playing on baseball’s biggest stage.
Vanderbilt this year has the most alumni on playoff rosters with six, the second straight year it has had the most alumni on playoff rosters. The Commodores also had the most alumni on Opening Day rosters with 11.
The postseason Vandy Boys are Dodgers righthander Walker Buehler, Giants catcher Curt Casali, Dodgers lefthander David Price, Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson, Braves righthander Kyle Wright and Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski.
Louisville and Mississippi State follow Vanderbilt with four alumni each on postseason rosters. Gulf Coast State (Fla.) JC leads all junior colleges with two alumni (who were drafted and signed out of junior college) in the playoffs.
Only four schools – Arkansas, Gulf Coast State JC, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt – have more than one player on World Series rosters. Both Gulf Coast State JC (outfielder Terrance Gore and righthander Will Smith) and Vanderbilt have a pair of Braves, while Arkansas (Astros righthander Ryne Stanek and Braves lefthander Drew Smyly) and Texas A&M (Braves lefthander A.J. Minter and Astros lefthander Brooks Raley) are split between the Astros and Braves.
Of the more than 270 players on playoff rosters this season, 130 went to a two- or four-year college. They represent 81 different schools, from Alabama (David Robertson, Rays) to Wisconsin-Stevens Point (J.P. Feyereisen, Rays).
This count credits players for their final college season before they went to pro ball. Players who went to a four-year school after junior college are counted only for their four-year school. Only players on a team’s 26-man active roster were counted.
(Totals updated entering the World Series.)
