2021 San Diego Padres Instructional League Roster
If you want variety in your prospects, Peoria is the place for you. Do you like elite infielders working their way back from injuries? Then check out CJ Abrams, who was tearing it up in the Double-A Central before a leg injury ended his season. His mix of hittability, power, top-end speed and positional value makes him one of the game’s future young stars.
Are you looking for a prospect in the middle of reset, in search of the best version of himself? Look no further than lefty MacKenzie Gore. The North Carolina southpaw ran into struggles over the past two seasons with control and command and was sent back to the Padres’ spring training facility for a reset. He worked his way back to Double-A, showing hints of his former self. He’ll look to get all the way back during instructs.
How about a high-upside outfielder who excelled in his first test as a pro? That’s Robert Hassell III, the Padres’ first-rounder from 2020 who impressed enough to warrant a move to High-A at season’s end. Before he left, he finished third in the Low-A West in batting average (.323), second in on-base percentage (.415) and ninth in slugging (.482).
What if you’re looking for one of the most dastardly pitches from the college ranks? Then Kevin Kopps is your man. The Arkansas alum used his slider-cutter hybrid to fan 131 hitters in 89.2 innings for the Razorbacks this past spring, then struck out 22 more in 14.2 innings as a pro, which saw him advance to Double-A.
