The Marlins continued to acquire pieces for the future, trading reliever John Curtiss to the Brewers for promising catching prospect Payton Henry on Friday.
Curtiss is the fourth member of the bullpen the Marlins traded in the past month, joining Yimi Garcia, Trevor Richards and Adam Cimber. In all, the Marlins traded away six members of their big league roster, with outfielders Starling Marte and Adam Duvall joining those pitchers.
MARLINS ACQUIRE
Payton Henry, C
Age: 24
Henry is a strong, physical catcher who long excelled on the defensive side of the ball and finally clicked offensively this year. He hit .297/.372/.390 in 49 games between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville this season. A wrestler growing up, Henry is a muscular 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and a strong presence behind the plate. He works hard, plays with energy and takes charge of his pitching staff while shutting down run games with sub-1.95-second pop times. Henry has improved his pitch recognition and pitch selection to tamp down on the massive swing-and-miss concerns he showed at lower levels. He has solid bat speed and above-average power, but he’s mostly worked to make more contact and get on base more frequently. His defense and improving contact and on-base skills give him a chance to have a major league role with the Marlins. He is in Triple-A and has a chance to debut within the next year.
BREWERS ACQUIRE
John Curtiss, RHP
Age: 28
Curtiss has put together his second straight solid season this year, going 3-1 2.48 in 40 appearances with Miami. He had 40 strikeouts and nine walks in 40 innings, primarily pitching in low-leverage, middle relief. He will join a stout Brewers bullpen and give them another quality arm to lead up to Josh Hader at the end of games. He remains under team control through the 2022 season and won’t be a free agent until after the end of the 2025 season.
